SUMMARY:Ann Mathie | “Integrating Expanded States: Eastern Contemplative Frameworks and Psychedelic Experience”
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk, Ann explores how Eastern contemplative traditions—particularly Theravāda Buddhist meditation systems—have historically understood and supported profound mystical experiences. Drawing from classical texts and living monastic traditions, she examines how these frameworks interpret altered states of consciousness and what they can offer contemporary discussions around psychedelic therapy and spiritual integration. The talk highlights both the opportunities and ethical challenges involved in bringing ancient contemplative models into dialogue with modern Western psychology.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio\n\nAnn Mathie studies ontological frameworks within the traditions of Yoga, Tantra, and Buddhism to better understand how expanded states of consciousness affect everyday psychological experience. Her work explores the parallels between spontaneous kundalini awakenings, meditative absorption states, and psychedelic experiences. Drawing on thousands of years of contemplative knowledge from Eastern traditions, Ann works to bridge ancient phenomenological frameworks with modern Western psychology in order to support the safe integration of profound transpersonal experiences.\n\nAnn holds a Master’s degree in Traditions of Yoga and Meditation from SOAS, University of London, where her work focused on the textual and philosophical study of contemplative traditions. Her research engages closely with Buddhist meditation manuals, Yogic and Tantric systems, and living contemplative lineages. She is particularly interested in how traditional frameworks map the stages of mystical experience and how these models may inform contemporary approaches to mental health, spiritual emergence, and psychedelic integration.\n\n
