Psychedelic experiences confront us with our perception of and relationship with existence - life, love, death, and beyond. Although they open the door to the transpersonal, we each get a unique view, based on our early attachments, ancestral history, culture, and something ineffable. Psychedelics unearth trauma, reuniting the split-off parts of a traumatic experience - sensation, affect, image, and meaning, which may leave us feeling shattered. They confront us with paradoxes and existential questions, as well as bring out our light: vitality, body intelligence, connectedness, power, and love, which can be equally difficult to integrate.
In therapy, these experiences can receive the relational space they need to be processed, leading to psychological re-organisation and sustained changes in daily life. To understand psychedelics, we need to speak their language - the language of the soul, body, myth, and poetry - and stay with the psychic images without giving premature answers.
As an integrative, depth-oriented therapist, I rely on my knowledge as much as my intuition and personal experience. I hold a certificate in 'Psychedelics and Depth Psychology: Treatment and Transformation in an Animated Cosmos' from Pacifica Graduate Institute. My research dissertation explored psychedelic-induced visionary relational encounters and their discussions in therapy.
