Carolina Maggio | “Starting from the Unknowable: Psychoanalytic Insights into Psychedelic Therapy”

This talk explores points of intersectionality between psychoanalysis and psychedelic therapy, aiming to elucidate how foundational psychoanalytic concepts may offer a valuable framework to navigate the uncharted landscapes of modern psychedelic therapy currently under investigation. Exploring the therapeutic meaning of mystical experience and ego dissolution through the lenses of Object Relations Theory, the talk will explore how the shared space between self and other in the psychedelic experience becomes a crucible for transformation, where the unthinkable can be thought, and the unknowable can become a starting point of what there is to be known. Exploring regression in the psychedelic context as an opportunity for profound psychic repair, the talk will discuss the potential of psychedelics to foster new capacities for symbolization and their significance for trauma recovery.

By bringing these two fields into dialogue, this presentation will explore how psychoanalytic theory can deepen our understanding of the mysterious nature of the psychedelic experience, and how its mystery, in turn, can enrich our understanding of psychoanalysis.

Carolina Maggio (MBACP) is a psychological therapist at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London. With clinical expertise in treating psychological trauma, she works on studies exploring the therapeutic application of psychedelics such as psilocybin, MDMA, 5-MeO-DMT and Methylone in patient populations such as PTSD, FND and MDD. As part of her work in psychedelic research, Carolina works as mentor and therapist trainer, as well as facilitator of the Maudsley Psychedelic Society Harm Reduction & Integration Group. With a strong interest in women health, Carolina is currently researching women’s unique biopsychosocial responses to psychedelic medicine, particularly within the context of sexual trauma. Currently based in London, her private practice is focused on understanding and making use of the connection between trauma, transpersonal experience and psychospiritual development. Appreciating the transformative potential of psychological crisis, her work also explores trauma recovery through the use of creativity and imagination, as a vehicle to integrate the experience of non-ordinary states of consciousness.
